The recent pandemic has been oddly unifying for many Americans. Despite keeping our distance from one another, we’re actually working together to keep the spread of COVID-19 down. Here at Rock Solid Exteriors, we’re doing our part to remain safe, by following CDC and WHO guidelines closely. We’ve implemented changes in how we do business (feel free to check out our PSA on COVID-19 to learn more) in order to protect our clients as well as our staff, while still offering our roofing, siding, and gutter services.

We find that folks around our neighborhoods may be going a bit stir-crazy in these trying, unprecedented times. Fortunately, the pandemic has presented many of us with free time to tackle projects that we may not otherwise make time for. That’s why we’re spending a few hours composing articles chock full of home improvement projects that you can tackle while staying safe and socially distant. Let’s kick off our list with a few minor projects that can make a huge impact on your home’s beauty and value. Consider improving the landscaping of your home, installing new lighting inside of your home, and updating the siding around your home to transform your property, inside and out!

Landscaping

Take a fresh look at your lawn, those landscaping rocks, the mulch on the berms around your property… or perhaps the dirt pit that you currently have as a backyard. There may be no better time to improve the landscaping of your home than the present. Consider planting new shade trees to grow tall over the back patio of your home. Or install a privacy fence to keep nosy neighbors and onlookers out. Expand your deck, or replace your current wooden deck with a composite deck, so that you won’t have to keep staining it every two years. Freshen up your property with a layer of new mulch (which will provide nutrients for trees and plants around your yard, while keeping weeds down). Or add more river rock on those bare patches throughout your landscape where you can see weed barrier cropping up. Now’s the perfect time to get the whole family involved and out of doors, while sprucing up the look of your home and making it the talk of the town. The potential here is truly limitless!

Install New Lighting

A few additional lights or lighting changes can work wonders to transform your property. When it comes to the interior of your home, consider installing under-cabinet lighting in your kitchen (often warm lighting looks best at night) to give you a well-lit, comfortable work space when you’re cooking in the evening. Guests will also love the look of your classy cabinet under-lighting. You can also place lights under the kitchen island or peninsula, or underneath bar-height countertops. Shop around for the best lighting to suit your tastes; you can find light bars that change colors at the click of a button, or lighting strands that tuck away easily underneath cabinets and countertops.

Next, head to the bathroom to reassess its lighting. While you may think that white lighting is best for the bathroom, since it looks sanitary, warm yellow lighting can have a calming comfortable appeal. It may be as simple as replacing a few bulbs with the right color to suit the mood you want to achieve. Also, be mindful that vanities are often under- or over-lighted, making onlookers squint or blinding them as they use the restroom at night. You can install an adjustable light switch with relative ease (just be sure to shut off the power at the breaker box if you’re installing a light switch yourself).

For other rooms throughout the house, flip on the switches and take note of any spaces that feel dark. Also, be wary that darker spaces make a room feel smaller and more cramped — do any of your rooms feel small or cramped? If so, add in lighting to compensate. It can be as simple as adding a standing lamp, or as complex as installing a new skylight.

Update Siding

Okay, we’ll admit this is a bit of a plug, but now is the perfect time to update your siding. If you live here in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne, or St. Clair Counties, you can count on us to install or replace your siding to give your home the ultimate upgrade. Your home will look as if it were just built! If you’re on the fence about re-siding your home, take a close look around its exterior. Ask yourself: Do I see signs of deterioration? Is my siding damaged by weather? Will a coat of paint cut it, or should I re-side? If you have siding that’s over a decade old, then it may be time for an upgrade, depending on the material that envelopes your home. Please, don’t hesitate to give us a call for a free quote. We can meet with you to take a look at your home, and discuss your vision for its future. Again, we’re currently open during the pandemic, and we adhere closely to CDC and WHO guidelines.
