If you see your roof leaks; if inclement weather such as heavy snow, torrential rains have worn and damaged your roof; if the builder gives no guarantee to the roof due to the passage of time; if an event of nature weakens your roof; or if you had to repair your roof several times and it has been worn and weakened, then it’s time to think that about that new roof. Our roofers are prepared for any roof disaster or emergency. Let our professional roofers plan and do all the work for you. Our roofing projects have a high quality of construction, they’re waterproof, and they have a high resistance to wear and erosion.
When its it time for roof repair?
That said, you can look for a few indications which may reveal that your roof is in need of repair (or in some cases, it may require roofing replacement!).
Keep an eye out for all of the following signs that your roof may need care:
If you have shingles that are curling at the edges, or shingles that are simply warped, they may be on their last leg. Shingles should lay flat against one another, in order to keep water from penetrating to the subsurface of your roof. Shingles often bend and warp if they are old, and they’ve endured temperature swings. When temperatures rapidly rise or fall, a weakened shingle can curl, leaving subsurface materials exposed.
Algae and Moss
Algae and moss can begin to grow on your shingles. Moss is especially common in Michigan, since it’s often cool and moist. Be wary that moss and algae can hold moisture against your roof’s surface, and that can enable penetration to the subsurface of your roof. Moss and algae may be cleaned from the surface of your home, but they may return! Do your best to keep your roof free from these substances to keep it protected. Keep an eye out for discoloration on your shingles, and look for moss at the edges of your shingles.
A Lack Of Granules
The granules on your shingles are responsible for shedding water over the surface of your shingles. They also provide protection from UV rays, and their coloring and texture adds aesthetic to your home. If you notice that your shingles are lacking granules, then they may be outdated, and they’ll require replacing. You can also check your downspouts to see if your shingles are shedding granules by the pound.
While some discoloration is natural (shingles will slowly fade over time), complete discoloration is a good indication that your shingles are outdated. While the color of the shingle won’t affect how well it works, it could be a tell-tale sign that your shingles are too old — and that means that they may fail at any point.
Torn, Cracked, Moving, Or Missing
This may be the most obvious indication that your roof requires repair. If you notice that you have shingles that are torn, cracked, moving, or entirely missing, you’d better act right away. Shingles can break, shift, or fly away due to weather, high winds, or impacts (e.g. hail, moving tree branches, etc.). These shingles may have also be poorly installed, or they may be poor-quality shingles.
The Age Of Your Roof
Do you know how old your roof is? If it’s 20 years or older, it’s likely that it requires replacing. Older roofs, especially those with poor-quality shingles, require updating. When shingles age beyond their lifetimes, they can fail, enabling water to penetrate your attic and your home. Look for warranty information on your roof, you may still have coverage if your roof requires replacing!
New Roof Construction
The roof is the most important part of any building or home; it protects the health and well-being of your family, residents, or customers. Michigan weather can create a natural disaster at any given moment causing damage to even the strongest roofs. If the roof is left untreated after a storm, the damages will expand and repairs will become even costlier. If you find yourself in a situation like this, you have 2 options: You can fix the problem yourself, or ask for a professional roofer to help. There are many people who believe that the DIY approach is the best and although it may save you money, but it could possibly end up costing you more if repairs are not performed correctly.
Roofing requires skills, knowledge and experience. That’s very important because a damaged roof presents a danger to all the people under it. At Rock Solid Exteriors, we will provide you with a thorough roof inspection to assess the damage and condition of your roof. You can rest assured that everything will be fixed the right way and that you won’t experience any problems when the next rain or snow comes. Plus, we use the best roofing materials to guarantee your safety.

Owen’s Corning’s Woodmoor Series Shingles are some of the most elegant shingles available on the market, and they’re some of the highest-end shingles available from Owens Corning. Owens Corning describes their Woodmoor Series Shingles: “Bold, rustic Woodmoor Shingles are designed to dramatically transform your home with the extra-thick dimension and rich texture reminiscent of wood shake but with greater durability and less maintenance. They also offer peace of mind by meeting the highest fire-resistance standards in the industry, Class A. Best of all, Woodmoor shingles come in distinctive color blends that are inspired by nature but not limited to it—giving your roof a pop of color you can’t get from real wood. As compared to Woodcrest Shingles, these shingles are thicker and heavier in weight.” Woodmoor Series Shingles are backed with a limited lifetime warranty.
The Woodcrest Series of shingles is similar to Woodmoor Series Shingles, although these shingles are slightly thinner (yet still quite thick compared to other shingles on the market) and they’re more affordable than Woodmoor Series Shingles. Owens Corning points out the benefits of their Woodcrest Series: “Thick, ruggedly beautiful Woodcrest Shingles use their rustic and textured appearance to create the look of wood shake without the maintenance. Their natural look comes with a durability that’s just as appealing. Woodcrest Shingles offer peace of mind by meeting the highest fire-resistance standards in the industry, Class A. These shingles are available in colorful distinctive blends that are inspired by nature so say goodbye to your limited, faded, and monotone color options of real wood.” Woodcrest Series Shingles are backed with a limited lifetime warranty.
Berkshire Shingles are premium, thick shingles that are designed to last. This laminated shingle features a uniform design, and a pattern that’s made to give your shingles an appealing look of dimension. Ownens Corning describes their Berkshire Series of shingles thusly: “Discover the difference that Berkshire Shingles can make on your home. These laminated shingles have a large 8-3/8″ x 8-1/2″ tab and feature unique shadow lines behind the tabs that add to the look of dimension. With a thickness, proportion and color selection reminiscent of natural slate, these top-of-the-line shingles make an elegant statement.” Berkshire Series Shingles are backed with a limited lifetime warranty.
Devonshire Series Shingles are similar in design and aesthetic to Berkshire Shingles, although they are a bit less expensive, and a bit thinner. Owens Corning gives us this description of their Devonshire Series of shingles: “Devonshire Shingles are designed to reflect the allure of natural slate without the high cost or heavy maintenance. These shingles feature a broad sculpted shape with a 5-5/8″ x 7-1/2″ tab. Devonshire Shingles offer an affordable alternative to other slate-look shingles and will add substance and character to your home.” Devonshire Series Shingles are backed with a limited lifetime warranty.
The Oakridge Series features shingles that are cut with organic patterns which give your roof the unique texture that you desire. Plus, Oakridge shingles are one of Owens Corning’s most affordable series. Owens Corning mentions, “Oakridge laminated shingles have a warm, inviting look in popular colors for a step up from traditional three-tab shingles. With an expanded Oakridge shingle color palette, we provide a unique blend of artistry and craftsmanship that will give your home a look that is anything but ordinary.” Oakridge Series Shingles are backed with a limited lifetime warranty.
Owens Corning’s Supreme shingles are their most affordable option, yet they’re still backed by a 25-year limited warranty, due to their durability. This line of shingles is simple, yet built to perform. Owens Corning notes the benefits of selecting their Supreme line of shingles: “Supreme three-tab shingles are the basic, smart choice when you want to balance weather resistance and value. A wide range of colors are available.”

The Features of Owens Corning Shingles
Owens Corning offers a variety of premier shingles, and these shingles feature a litany of patented roofing technologies, including StreakGuard™ Algae Protection, SureNail® durability technology, WeatherGuard® technology, TruDefinition® coloring, and shingles that are backed with an ENERGY STAR® rating. Let’s delve into the details of each of these ground-breaking technologies, and let’s outline the specific products that contain each of these features.
Algae can be a nuisance on your roof, and it can leave your shingles with unsightly black streaks. Owens Corning’s StreakGuard technology inhibits algae growth, which ensures that your attic remains impenetrable and moisture-free. Plus, Owens Corning’s StreakGuard protection comes with a 10-year warranty.
Owens Corning’s StreakGuard protection is available for Woodmore, Woodcrest, Devonshire, Berkshire, and some Duration-style shingles.
For the most durable shingles, you can count on Owens Corning’s SureNail technology. Shingles with SureNail have added durability, thanks to a fabric strip located in the nailing area of the shingle. This strip adds gripping power, while improving the stability of the shingle, and reducing the likelihood of a tear. Owens Corning notes all of the features and benefits of their SureNail technology:
- “Patented SureNail® Technology — Only from Owens Corning and featured on our Duration® Series shingles.
- Breakthrough Design — The tough-engineered woven-fabric nailing strip is embedded in the shingle to create a strong, durable fastener zone.
- Triple Layer Protection®+ — A unique “triple layer” of reinforcement occurs when the fabric overlays the two shingle layers, called the common bond area.
- Outstanding Grip — The SureNail® strip enhances the already amazing grip of our proprietary Tru-Bond® sealant.
- Exceptional Wind Resistance — The SureNail® grip helps deliver 130-MPH wind warranty* performance with fewer nails than required by most competitors.”
Owens Corning’s SureNail technology is available in their Duration Storm line of shingles.
Owens Corning’s Duration STORM series of shingles features WeatherGuard technology that’s specifically designed to resist impacts. Duration STORM shingles are available with Class 4 Impact Resistance, the highest rating available under the UL 2218 Testing Standard. Due to this impact rating, some homeowners may be able to earn discounts on their insurance premiums — speak with a representative of your homeowner’s insurance company to see if their are insurance discounts available.
